Architecture and painting have always shared a close relationship, as both are considered to be manifestations of the universal fine arts. These disciplines pursue perfection and beauty, awakening in us emotion and admiration. And what better way to integrate these two manifestations than to recover and transform buildings that have ceased to have a social and economic purpose into art galleries or cultural centers?
In this publication, I present one of these buildings dedicated to the promotion of art. It is the Cultural Station "El Carmelo", located on Linea Street in the neighborhood of El Vedado in Havana, Cuba 🇨🇺.
About the history of the place
In the last century this place was a tramway station that connected the new and modern town of El Vedado with the oldest part of Havana. Street number 9 in this neighborhood, known as Line Street, was given its name because the tramway rails used to run along it. Over the years, the station disappeared and was transformed into a bus factory and later, in the 1990s, into a factory for assembling bicycles. Today, after extensive restoration work, it is used as a cultural center.
This building is spacious and large, and what stands out the most is the presence of brick in its construction. Personally, I love this type of traditional construction because of the feeling of durability that brick conveys. This material has been used in all kinds of buildings over the centuries, from the most luxurious to the simplest, which also gives the place a touch of antiquity. In my opinion, the Centro Cultural El Carmelo has a very attractive, simple and sober design. What I like most about this center is how beautiful it has become after the excellent restoration work. This place was very run down, but thanks to this restoration it has been restored to its original appearance, which is really admirable!
Fine Arts and Architecture 🎨
On the day of my visit, I did not expect to find an art exhibition. Actually, I went looking for a craft fair, and was surprised to discover a large art exhibition. It was a pleasant surprise, as I have visited very few in my life. I must admit that I am not an expert in painting, not even an amateur jeje, the only thing I can tell you is that I really enjoyed everything I saw in this special place.
First, I would like to show you the outside of the building, where the most striking features are the big iron grilles that protect the windows. Each one is different and beautifully crafted, with numerous details illustrating the history of the building and the various functions it has had over the years.
On entering, I found that there were very few people, so I took my time to wander around and admire it all quietly. Here are some photos of my tour and the works on display.
One thing that caught my attention while inside is how spacious this place is, with high walls as well as columns. This is quite a large building with impressive glass windows, allowing the natural light to flow through almost everywhere. It also has large doors that help to keep the place cool and well ventilated. Its gabled roof is amazing, with a metal structure and glass panes that provide a lot of clarity.
On its walls were the works of several talented artists of the Cuban plastic arts. The place was full of color with this exhibition, and the paintings managed to embellish and enliven the surroundings, creating an interesting contrast with the brick background of the surrounding walls.
The site is spacious both inside and outside. Outside there is a large courtyard where there was a small commercial fair and some cafeterias. This space has also been used as one of the venues for the handicraft fair (FIART) that is held annually in Cuba. I believe that there is still a lot of space to be used in this Cultural Station and that, little by little, more areas will be dedicated to art, considering that it has only been open to the public for a short time.

La arquitectura y la pintura siempre han compartido una estrecha relación, ya que ambas son consideradas manifestaciones de las bellas artes universales. Estas disciplinas persiguen la perfección y la belleza, despertando en nosotros emoción y admiración. ¿Y qué mejor forma de integrar estas dos manifestaciones que recuperar y transformar las edificaciones que han dejado de tener un objetivo social y económico en galerías de arte o centros culturales?
En esta publicación, les presento una de estas edificaciones dedicadas a la promoción del arte. Se trata de la Estación Cultural "El Carmelo", ubicada en la calle Línea del barrio de El Vedado en La Habana, Cuba 🇨🇺.
Sobre la historia del lugar
En el pasado siglo este lugar fue una estación de tranvías que conectaba al nuevo y moderno poblado de El Vedado con la zona más antigua de La Habana. La calle número 9 de este barrio, conocida como Calle Línea, recibió su nombre ya que por ella pasaban los rieles del tranvía. Con el paso de los años, la estación desapareció, y fue transformada en una fábrica de autobuses y posteriormente, en la década de los años noventa, en una fábrica para ensamblar bicicletas. Actualmente, después de realizarse un gran trabajo de restauración cumple la función de Centro Cultural.
Esta edificación es espaciosa y de gran tamaño, y lo que más destaca en ella es la presencia del ladrillo en su construcción. Personalmente, me encantan este tipo de construcciones tradicionales debido a la sensación de durabilidad que transmite el ladrillo. Este material ha sido utilizado en todo tipo de edificaciones a lo largo de los siglos, desde las más lujosas hasta las más sencillas, lo que también le aporta al local un toque de antigüedad. En mi opinión, el Centro Cultural El Carmelo posee un diseño muy atractivo, sencillo y sobrio. Lo que más me gusta de este centro es lo bonito que ha quedado después del excelente trabajo de restauración realizado. Este sitio se encontraba muy deteriorado, pero gracias a esta restauración se le ha devuelto su aspecto original, ¡lo que es realmente admirable!
Artes Plásticas y Arquitectura🎨
El día de mi visita, no esperaba encontrarme con una exposición de arte. En realidad, fui buscando una feria de artesanía, y me sorprendí al descubrir una amplia exhibición de arte. Fue una sorpresa agradable, ya que he visitado muy pocas en mi vida. Debo admitir que no soy una experta en pintura, ni siquiera una aficionada jeje, lo único que puedo contarles es que disfruté mucho de todo lo que vi en este lugar tan especial.
Primero, me gustaría mostrar el exterior del edificio, donde lo más llamativo son las grandes rejas de hierro que protegen las ventanas. Cada una de ellas es diferente y están muy bien elaboradas, con numerosos detalles que ilustran la historia del edificio y las diversas funciones que ha tenido a lo largo de los años.
Al entrar, encontré que había muy pocas personas, por lo que me dediqué a recorrer y admirarlo todo con bastante calma. A continuación, les muestro algunas fotos de mi recorrido y de las obras expuestas.
Algo que llamó mi atención estando dentro es lo espacioso que es este lugar, con altas paredes y columnas. Esta es una construcción bastante amplia que cuenta con impresionantes ventanales de cristal, permitiendo a la luz natural inundarlo casi todo. También tiene grandes puertas que ayudan a que el lugar este fresco y bien ventilado. Su techo a dos aguas es asombroso, con una estructura metálica y cristales que proporcionan mucha claridad.
En sus paredes se encontraban las obras de varios talentosos artistas de las artes plásticas cubanas. El lugar lucia lleno de color con esta exposición, y los cuadros lograban embellecer y dar vida al entorno, creando un interesante contraste con el fondo de ladrillos de las paredes.
El sitio es espacioso tanto adentro como en su exterior. Afuera tiene un amplio patio en donde había una pequeña feria comercial y algunas cafeterías. Este espacio también ha sido utilizado como una de las sedes de la feria de artesanía (FIART) que se celebra anualmente en Cuba. Creo que aún hay mucho espacio por aprovechar en esta Estación Cultural y que, poco a poco, se destinarán más áreas dedicadas al arte, considerando que lleva poco tiempo abierto al público.
