Greetings to all this excellent Wednesday Walk community.

As almost every week, I join this initiative to show you a part of my tour around the city. In today's walk I want to show you the Iron Bridge in Havana, Cuba. But before I start telling you about it, I'll tell you a little about the river that flows under it.

Un Saludo a toda esta excelente comunidad de Paseo de Miércoles.

Como casi cada semana, me uno a esta iniciátiva para mostrarles una parte de mi recorrido por la ciudad. En mi paseo de hoy les quiero enseñar el Puente de Hierro, en la Habana, Cuba. Pero antes de comenzar a contar sobre él, les comento un poco acerca del río que fluye bajo él.

The Almendares River 💦

This river, symbol of the city, is the longest of all those that cross the capital. It flows from the east to the west, crossing several municipalities along the way, among them the locality of Vedado in the Plaza Municipality, where it flows out to the sea at the site known as La Chorrera.

Este río, símbolo de la ciudad, es el de mayor extensión de todos los que atraviesan la capital. Fluye desde el Este hacia el Oeste, atravesando varios municipios en su recorrido, entre ellos la localidad del Vedado en el Municipio Plaza, donde tiene su salida al mar en el sitio conocido como La Chorrera

The Iron Bridge 🌉

Returning to the bridge, it is located over the Almendares river, almost at the end of its course, at its mouth to the sea. Its function was and still is to link the 11th Street of Vedado with the Municipality of Mariano, now Miramar municipality. In the early years of the 20th century, it was known as "The Tramway Bridge" as it was the only one that allowed the passage of this means of transport from one municipality to another.

In addition to automobiles, lighter vehicles such as bicycles and motorbikes also pass through here, as they are not allowed to cross the Linea tunnel, which is almost parallel to the bridge and passes under the Almendares River.

El puente de Hierro 🌉

Volviendo al puente, este se encuentra sobre el rio Almendares, casi al final de su cauce, en su desembocadura al mar. Y su función era y es, la de unir la Calle 11na del Vedado con el Municipio de Mariano, actual municipio Miramar. En los primeros años del siglo XX, fue conocido como "El puente de los tranvías" ya que era el único que permitía el paso de este medio de transporte de un municipio a otro.

Además de automóviles también transitan por aquí los vehículos más ligeros como bicicletas y motocicletas ya que estos no están permitidos a cruzar el túnel de Línea, que se encuentra casi paralelo al puente y pasa por debajo del río Almendares.

I remember when I was younger the first time I crossed this bridge. It was a time when bicycles were widely used in Cuba, and most people (myself included) moved around Havana on this mode of transport. I was a bit apprehensive about crossing it, as the floor is not smooth, it has holes in its design, and it felt quite unstable. So you had to have good balance. If it had been now, I would have got off the bike and walked across. 🚲

Recuerdo cuando era más joven la primera vez que crucé este puente. Fue una época en la que en Cuba se utilizaba mucho la bicicleta, y la mayoría de las personas (yo incluida) nos movimos por La Habana en este medio de transporte. Me sentí un poco temerosa al cruzarlo, ya que el piso no es liso, tiene agujeros propios del diseño, y se sentía bastante inestable. Así que había que tener buen equilibrio. Si hubiera sido ahora, me bajo de la bicicleta y lo atravieso caminando. 🚲

It also has a footbridge on both sides so that pedestrians can cross it on foot. The most pleasant thing is to enjoy the beautiful view of the river, you can even see where it flows into the sea.

También cuenta con una pasarela a ambos lados para que los peatones puedan atravesarlo a pie. Lo más agradable es disfrutar de la bonita vista del río, incluso se puede apreciar el lugar de su desembocadura.

This bridge was remodelled in 2013 due to the fact that its structure was quite deteriorated by corrosion, which represented a danger. New steel structures and modern technology were used to protect it from wear and tear, while respecting its original design.

Este puente fue remodelado en el año 2013 debido a que su estructura se encontraba bastante deteriorada por la corrosión, lo que representaba un peligro. Se utilizaron nuevas estructuras de acero, y tecnología moderna, para así protegerlo del desgaste, respetando siempre su diseño original.

I really enjoyed passing by this place. A very nice place where we can admire the beauty of the river on its way to the sea. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Me gustó mucho pasar por este lugar. Un sitio muy agradable donde se puede admirar la belleza del rio en su salida hacia el mar. Espero lo hayan disfrutado tanto como yo.
