This fortress is located on the bay of Havana, a geographically strategic point, since its purpose was not only defensive but also to see from a distance if an enemy ship was approaching. La Cabaña was conceived as a military fortress to defend the city from the attack of corsairs and pirates, and its construction became necessary after La Villa de La Habana was conquered by the English. It was built on the hill through which the invading troops penetrated.
It was complete constructed in 1774 and its name pays homage to the Spanish King Carlos III, who ordered its construction after Spain recovered the city after it had been in the hands of the British Empire for eleven months. The architect in charge of its construction was the Spanish engineer Silvestre de Abarca. It was the largest fortification of its time, and had the reputation of being invincible. 💪
La Cabaña is preserved in very good condition, it is impossible not to be astonished as we approach its walls. It is impressive that such an imposing construction has survived the wear and tear of time in an area where the humidity of salt water and the scourge of the elements is quite cruel. We must also speak in favor of the great restoration work to which it has been subjected.
Its main access is formed by a large arch with two columns on each side which are partially embedded in the wall. On top of the arch there are carved informative letters about its construction and the year it was finished.
This great fortress is surrounded by an immense ditch. As we approach its walls we cross the bridge that serves as a walkway to the arch of its main entrance, and below on both sides, we have the striking view of the deep moat that surrounds it. I was looking down with some trepidation as I am quite impressed by heights.
I was visiting this site with a group of friends, my husband and youngest daughter, and both my little girl and I were in awe of every thing we saw. My little girl was the first time she had seen cannons, so she was amazed and kept asking me if the cannons really worked.
And is that this fortress housed a large number of cannons, most of them located in its walls, so in its time it had an immense firepower and artillery. You can still see some of them, which are magnificently preserved.
A tradition linked to its history and that has lasted until our time as a symbol of the past, is the ceremony where the closing of the gates of the wall surrounding the city was announced at nine o'clock at night, with the bang of the cannons of the fort. The firing of the cannons warned to the citizens that the gates of the wall would be closed until the following day. Those who did not cross the gates in time would be left at the mercy of the night, until the following morning when they would open again. This ceremony is still celebrated and in the places closest to La Cabaña we can hear every night punctually at 9 o'clock the thundering of its cannons warning us to stay safe.
Walking through its cobblestone streets is like being transported to 18th century Havana. I felt part of its inhabitants, who must have felt very safe knowing that this majestic fort with its impregnable walls and weapons always ready to defend them was standing guard over this hill, always protecting them. It is impossible not to imagine the best soldiers of the Spanish army walking through its streets and squares, always ready in case of a possible attack (which never happened).
La Cabaña is very beautiful. From inside, if you look over its walls towards the sea, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the bay of Havana and a large part of its coastline. In the distance at the other end of the coast you can see the tallest buildings, the most modern hotels, the Malecon and even the Capitol. A landscape that leaves us in awe of its beauty. The first time I was in this place and I could admire the city below, I was amazed. I have always visited this place during the day, but being able to enjoy a sunset here must be simply unforgettable. ❤️
This fortress is a World Heritage Site, and all its charm does not fit in a single writing. So I would like to make two publications, this being the first one.
Ideally, you could visit the place to soak up its energy and be as admired by this majestic fortification as all of us who have had the pleasure of visiting it.

La fortaleza de El Castillo de San Carlos de La Cabaña.
Esta fortaleza está situada sobre la bahía de La Habana, un punto geográficamente estratégico, ya que su propósito además de defensivo era divisar desde la distancia si se acercaba algún barco enemigo. La Cabaña se concibió como fortaleza militar para defender a la ciudad del ataque de corsarios y piratas, y su construcción se hizo necesaria después de que La Villa de La Habana fuera conquistada por los ingleses. Su emplazamiento se realizó en la colina por la que penetraron las tropas invasoras.
Se terminó de construir en año 1774 y su nombre rinde homenaje al rey español Carlos III, el que ordenó su construcción luego de que España recuperara nuevamente la ciudad que estuvo en poder del imperio británico durante once meses. El arquitecto encargado de su construcción fue el ingeniero español Silvestre de Abarca. Está fue la mayor fortificación de su época, y tenía fama de ser invencible.💪
La Cabaña se conserva en muy buen estado, es imposible no quedar maravillados a medida que nos acercamos a sus murallas. Es impresionante que tan imponente construcción haya sobrevivido al desgaste del tiempo en una zona donde la humedad del agua salada y el azote de los elementos es bastante cruel. También hay que hablar a favor de la gran labor de restauración a la que ha sido sometida.
Su acceso principal lo conforma un gran arco con dos columnas a cada lado las que están incrustadas parcialmente en su pared. Encima de su arco hay talladas unas letras informativas acerca de su construcción y el año en que se terminó.
Esta gran fortaleza está rodeada por una inmensa zanja. Al ir acercándonos a sus muros atravesamos el puente que sirve de pasarela hacia el arco de su entrada principal, y debajo a ambos lados, tenemos la impactante visión del profundo foso que la rodea. Yo miraba hacia abajo con un poco de temor ya que las alturas me impresionan bastante.
Estuve de visita en este sitio con un grupo de amigos, mi esposo y mi hija menor, y tanto mi niña como yo estábamos maravilladas de cada cosa que veíamos. Mi pequeña era la primera vez que veía cañones por lo que no salía de su asombro y no paraba de preguntarme si los cañones funcionaban de verdad.
Y es que esta fortaleza albergaba una gran cantidad de cañones, emplazados la mayoría en sus murallas, por lo que en su época contaba con un inmenso poder de fuego y artillería. Aun se pueden ver algunos de ellos, los que se conservan magníficamente.
Una tradición vinculada a su historia y que ha perdurado hasta nuestro tiempo como símbolo del pasado, es la ceremonia donde se avisaba del cierre de las puertas de la muralla que rodeaban la ciudad justo a las nueve de la noche, con el tronar de los cañones del fuerte. El disparo de los cañones avisaba a los ciudadanos que las puertas de la muralla serían cerradas hasta el siguiente día. Los que no cruzaran sus puertas a tiempo quedarían a merced de la noche, hasta la siguiente mañana cuando abrían nuevamente. Esta ceremonia aún se celebra y en los sitios más cercanos a La Cabaña se escucha cada noche puntualmente a las 9 el tronar de sus cañones avisándonos para que nos mantengamos a buen resguardo.
Caminar por sus calles adoquinadas es como transportarnos a La Habana del siglo XVIII. Me sentí parte de sus habitantes, los cuales debieron sentirse muy seguros sabiendo que sobre esta colina protegiéndolos siempre, estaba vigilante este majestuoso fuerte con sus inexpugnables murallas y sus armas siempre listas para su defensa. Es imposible no imaginarse a los mejores soldados del ejército español caminando por sus calles y plazas, siempre preparados en caso de un posible ataque (el cual nunca ocurrió).
La Cabaña es muy hermosa. Desde su interior si miramos por encima de sus muros hacia el mar, se puede disfrutar de la preciosa vista de la bahía de La Habana, y gran parte de su litoral. A lo lejos en el otro extremo de su costa se pueden observar las edificaciones más altas, los hoteles más modernos, el Malecón y hasta el Capitolio. Un paisaje que nos deja admirados por su belleza. La primera vez que estuve en este lugar y pude admirar la ciudad debajo, quedé maravillada. Siempre he visitado este sitio en el día, pero poder disfrutar aquí de un atardecer debe ser simplemente inolvidable. ❤️
Esta fortaleza es Patrimonio de la Humanidad, y todo su encanto no cabe en un solo escrito. Por lo que me gustaría realizar dos publicaciones, siendo esta la primera.
Lo ideal sería que pudieran visitar el lugar para que se impregnen de su energía y puedan quedar tan admirados con esta majestuosa fortificación como todos los que hemos tenido el placer de visitarla.
