Old Havana has many places of great historical and social value, that is why walking through its streets is always an encounter with the memory that shaped the life and customs of the city up to the present day. An example is the Central Railway Station of Havana, located near the port of the capital, between Egido and Arsenal avenues, a grand building that since 2002, due to its importance and beauty, was declared a National Monument.
If we go around the main building, we arrive at a park that is right in front of the railway station. Here there is an open-air museum where those who walk through it can see old locomotive cars that have been carefully restored for everyone’s enjoyment. Here any visitor can take photos and interact with these vehicles. It is very interesting to be able to observe and even touch these old cars that were an essential part of the city’s history.
This is a place that is always very lively, since from here trains depart to different provinces of the country. That is why it is common to see people waiting with large packages or briefcases, ready to begin their journey. That dynamic turns the place into a daily spectacle, an entertainment while waiting for the train to leave.
Another encounter with history can also be found in the nearby streets, where remains of the old wall are still preserved, which in the seventeenth century protected the city from the siege of pirates and corsairs. Each night, after announcing with the roar of a cannon the closing of the wall’s gates, it was essential to remain sheltered behind its thick stone walls, otherwise one risked falling prey to bandits or spending the night outdoors until dawn.
These walls fulfilled their function for many years, until it was decided that they were no longer necessary and they were demolished. However, fragments are still preserved scattered in several points of Old Havana, like pieces from other times placed upon the present. It is as if in those places the past materialized to continue reminding us that the city is a mosaic of eras and memories.
It is for all this that I love walking through any corner of Old Havana. Walking here is more than a simple stroll, it is a journey among the memories of the city.

La Habana Vieja tiene muchos lugares de gran valor histórico y social, por eso recorrer sus calles es siempre un encuentro con la memoria que formó la vida y las costumbres de la ciudad hasta nuestros días. Un ejemplo es la Estación Central de Ferrocarriles de La Habana ubicada cerca del puerto de la capital, entre las avenidas Egido y Arsenal, una grandiosa edificación que desde el año 2002 por su importancia y su belleza, fue declarada Monumento Nacional.
Si damos bordeamos el edificio principal, llegamos a un parque que está justo frente a la estación de ferrocarriles, aquí se encuentra un museo al aire libre donde quienes caminan por él pueden ver antiguos carros de locomotoras que han sido cuidadosamente restaurados para el disfrute de todos. Aquí cualquier visitante puede tomarse fotos e interactuar con estos vehículos. Es muy interesante poder observar e incluso tocar estos carros antiguos que formaron parte esencial de la historia de la ciudad.
Este es un sitio que siempre está muy animado pues desde aquí parten los trenes hacia diferentes provincias del país. Por eso es común ver personas esperando con grandes paquetes o maletines, en espera de emprender su viaje. Esa dinámica convierte el lugar en un espectáculo cotidiano, un entretenimiento mientras se espera la salida del tren.
Otro encuentro con la historia lo tenemos en las calles cercanas donde aún se conservan restos de la antigua muralla que en el siglo XVII protegía a la ciudad del asedio de piratas y corsarios. Cada noche, después de anunciar con el rugido de un cañón el cierre de sus puertas de la muralla, era imprescindible quedar al resguardo tras sus gruesas paredes de piedra, pues de lo contrario se corría el riesgo de ser presa de bandidos o de pasar la noche a la intemperie hasta el amanecer.
Estas murallas cumplieron su función durante muchos años, hasta que se decidió que ya no eran necesarias y fueron demolidas. Sin embargo todavía se conservan fragmentos esparcidos en varios puntos de La Habana Vieja, como piezas del de otras épocas colocadas sobre el presente. Es como si en esos lugares el pasado se materializar para continuar recordándonos que la ciudad ees un mosaico de épocas y memorias.
Es por todo esto que adoro pasear por cualquier rincón de La Habana Vieja. Caminar por aquí es más que un recorrido, es un viaje en el entre las memorias de la ciudad.
